Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park

Designated in 1999, Black Canyon is one of the newest National Parks. The park can both be enjoyed as a pitstop from Montrose with a walk along the rim, or as a full or multi-day adventure. Black Canyon offers amazing hiking, rock climbing, fishing, and whitewater. For more information and updates, check the National Park Service website.

Dominguez Escalante

Dominguez-Escalante National Conservation Area is a special place nestled within the remarkable canyon country of the Uncompahgre Plateau. There is hiking, off-roading, swimming and within the red cliffs, canyons and rivers that are easily accessible from Montrose. Here is a map of the area.

Fishing

Montrose provides diverse fishing options for all skill levels and ages, spanning from canyon pools to lakes and reservoirs. Fly fishermen, spin casters, and bait fishermen can all find opportunities to enjoy the wide range of trout species available, including rainbow, brown, cutthroat, brook trout, and occasional kokanee salmon, just a short drive away from Montrose.

Mountain Biking

Montrose has a variety of amazing single track for all skill levels. The trails are located in 3 general geographic areas: Gunnison Gorge National Conservation Area, Dry Creek Area, and Uncompahgre Plateau. A favorite local trail is Sidewinder Trail, on par with other desert classics. If you prefer forest riding, explore the Aspen Loop which will tour you through gorgeous aspen groves.

Telluride

The roadtrip from Montrose to Telluride is a quick 1 hour and 20 minute drive! Explore the natural beauty and unique downtown of Telluride from your lodging in Montrose. The drive takes you through beautiful Colorado peaks and valleys, past 14,000ft mountains, and through the high altitude mountain town of Ridgeway.

Winter Activities

In the middle of winter, Montrose can be quite warm or quite cold. When it’s warmer, the area is a great escape from winter. Montrose provides good access to skiing with Telluride, Silverton, Powderhorn, Crested Butte, Monarch, and Purgatory all less than two hours away. Snowmobilers have great access to the Grand Mesa, Black Mesa, and Uncomahgre Plateau. The Dave Wood Winter Recreation Area provides XC skiing and snowshoeing only a short drive from town. The Black Canyon is also great during winter months.
